Spud – Learning to Fly Review

July 11th, 2009

Spud - Learning to flyI first came across the Spud series by accident. A few of my friends at school were excitedly talking about skipping a lesson and going with the librarian to a nearby shopping centre to see John van de Ruit. I had no idea who that was but when offered the opportunity to miss class I wasn’t going to say no.

I happily climbed in the car totally oblivious to what I was getting myself into. We arrived at the Exclusive Books and took our seat in front of John. He began talking about Spud and having stolen his diary, in my naive state I thought he really had stolen some kid’s diary and published it. It wasn’t until he started reading a section of the book that my curiosity sky rocketed. It was one of the wombat scenes. After a few annoying questions about whether the book was about him or not, I’m sure John must be so tired of answering that question, I was already plotting an ingenious plan to get the book ASAP. Needless to say I was hooked and eagerly awaited the second book. This time I managed to wangle a review copy out of the penguins (Penguin Publishers), of whom I’m growing very fond, for the third book.

It arrived early on launch day. I had a friend coming over for the day and was ready to get rid of him before my mother convinced me that that would be rude. The second my friend left I lunged into the book and devoured it page by page. All of my favourite characters are back for more zany adventures.

The book follows Spud’s third year of high school. Being a senior doesn’t make life any easier for Spud. With a new Malawian boy in their dorm, everybody pushing for prefect, and a whole term in a girls boarding school, Spud’s journey from boy to man is filled with fall off your chair laughing moments. These are best enjoyed away from the public eye. The last thing you need is for the funny farm to be after you.

The book definitely has a more mature tone, not only from Spud but from John as an author. The laughs are often more sophisticated but the right mix with slap stick is still there. What amazes me is the way John has matured the characters without loosing the humour. You notice it, but it doesn’t bother you. In fact it’s what keeps the story fresh.

It should be noted that for the first time the book really feels like it’s going somewhere from the start. By the time you reach the end, you’ll feel satisfied that the story has set a direction for the final book – something which was lacking in the last two books.

I really can’t fault the book. Whether it’s because I’m blinded by my fetish with the characters or my relation to the twists of life is yet to be seen. What I can say with 100% surety is this; the book holds a special quality of truth even though the storyline and characters can seem so outrages. The magic John puts into the book doesn’t seem formulated it feels real, and that’s something to be proud of.

Moving to the home site

July 10th, 2009

standouttWelcome to the first instalment of the Life and times of Marc Williams. These blog posts will be more personal and not the usual jokes, reviews and entertainment news that will continue to flow through the new standoutt. I’ll use this space to air some views and whatever little thoughts pop into my head. For now though I wanted to give everyone an update on the beta version of standoutt.

The last few weeks in the standoutt universe have been very busy. Once I get into a project I tend to go all out and things have progressed a lot faster than I had originally thought. In my excitement I have managed to get the blog up and running nicely and a preliminary version of the Srizzil page too. I have also moved the beta onto the main site now, rather than later, to make Google happy. They don’t treat your site too well if you keep moving your content around.

Unfortunately the move didn’t go very well. I backed up the wrong files and after upgrading a few things the site broke. It took me forever to fix the problem but praise God we are back up and running. This is the reason I hate computers – they aren’t people proof. If I make a mistake the computer should help me fix it, not make it harder to fix. What took five seconds to break turned into hours of fixing. These things only make a person more paranoid.

Looking to the future, the next few weeks will have a focus on content and bug fixing. Once I’m satisfied that everything is 100% with the blog, home page, and Srizzil page, I can start working on the movies page.

Stay tuned and enjoy. If you have any thoughts, ideas or complaints, feel free to contact us at www.standoutt.com/contact

Welcome to standoutt’s 2009 beta

June 22nd, 2009

standoutt betaThis is it, the big show, the main event, the party to end all parties, our beta phase. This is going to be one of the largest upgrades I’ve ever made to any of my sites. For the first time ever, the design is 100% original, and I’ll be coding it all. *Ahhhh* As much as a hate working with this strange language, seeing your design come to life is one of the most rewarding things in the world. Unfortunately professional designers are way too expensive, and the chances of them doing exactly what I want are slim. So here we go.

This process will run over the next few months, as we go along I’ll add more pages and make sure they work 100% before moving onto the next. I’ve already started work on the Home Page and the Blog page. These are already running but I’m ironing out problems and adding extras – the thing that takes the longest. Once I’m done, my good friend Richard – artichoke.standoutt.com – will be  designing some awesome backgrounds for each section.

Once those two main pages are done I will be tackling the movies page. Expect galleries, trailers, reviews, news, top 10s, and ratings. This will probably be the most difficult section to do but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Srizzil will finally get it’s honorary space after movies have been added, followed by a downloads page which will be the home of our wallpapers and competitions.

The scariest thing will be moving all our old content across to the new site. Something which will start as soon as the blog section is done. When all is done the site will move back to the full www.standoutt.com home page and we’ll have more time for some awesome new content.

It’s going to be an exciting few months. To top it off, during the process more content will be added continuously. Look out for a full Spud – Learning to fly review in the next week, and more Srizzil videos. Also stay tuned for our first give-away honoring the launch of our beta project.

Little Old Lady

May 18th, 2009

Little Old LadyThere was a little old lady who, every morning, stepped onto her front porch, raised her arms to the sky and shouted: ‘PRAISE THE LORD, His Love and Mercy endures forever!’

One day an atheist moved into the house next door. He became irritated at the little old lady. Every morning he’d step onto his front porch after her and yell: ‘THERE IS NO LORD!’

Time passed with the two of them carrying on this way every day.
One morning, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch and shouted: ‘PRAISE THE LORD! Please Lord, I have no food and I am starving, provide for me, oh Lord! The next morning she stepped out onto her porch and there were two huge bags of groceries sitting there.
‘PRAISE THE LORD!’ she cried out. ‘HE HAS PROVIDED GROCERIES FOR ME!’

The atheist neighbour jumped out of the hedges and shouted: ‘THERE IS NO LORD; I BOUGHT THOSE GROCERIES!’

The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted: ‘PRAISE THE LORD! HE HAS PROVIDED ME WITH GROCERIES AND MADE THE DEVIL PAY FOR THEM!’
