Paramore

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I discovered Paramore through an insistent friend who was completely obsessed with the band. He played me a few songs and I was hooked. When Brand New Eyes hit the shelves I snapped it up instantly, playing it hundreds of times on my iPod, in the car and on the computer.

I am proud to say they are currently my favourite band, and if they keep producing music on the level of Brand New Eyes, they will continue to hold that spot. Loving Paramore’s music seems to gain you a little street cred on the muso’s circuit too, which is a nice bonus. ;)

Without further ado, below is their official bio.

BAND INFO

The combination of musical energy between brothers and Hayley’s bold charisma earned them instant attention, particularly from Florida indie Fueled by Ramen, who signed the band and put them to work recording their debut. Says Hayley, “Some of our favorite bands are on Fueled by Ramen. We knew that they would know exactly how to carry out the vision for our band and music.” Paramore went into the studio with producers James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Underoath) and Mike Green (Yellowcard, The Black Maria) and blew them away with their sincerity and enthusiasm.

HISTORY

As Paramore embark on the most successful year of their career, there seems to be no limit as to what they can accomplish. The band’s last 2007 album RIOT! has sold over two million copies worldwide, the group was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008 for “Best New Artist” and even their live CD/DVD The Final Riot! has gone gold. However while these statistics are impressive, record sales have never been the driving force behind Paramore and that fact has never been as evident as it is on the group’s highly anticipated third full-length brand new eyes. In fact, as excited as this group of young adults from Franklin, Tennessee are to have had the opportunity to tour with their heroes like Jimmy Eat World and No Doubt over the past few years, they seem even more ecstatic to share brand new eyes with the world. “I hope that every record is a progression for us, but this one is definitely a huge leap from RIOT!,” the band’s front woman Hayley Williams explains. “I just can’t wait to get back on the road and start playing these new songs live.”

Anyone who has seen the band on the road already knows Paramore have an incendiary live show; however with brand new eyes, the group has proved they’re also able to juxtapose all of their indie-minded influences into a seamless collection of songs that embrace the future without abandoning the band’s past. Additionally, the process of making brand new eyes seems to have taught the group–Hayley, guitarists Josh Farro and Taylor York, drummer Zac Farro and bassist Jeremy Davis–countless lessons about who they are both inside and outside of Paramore. “We’ve been through a ton of stressful, pressure-filled situations since RIOT! came out and I feel like I’m a completely new person,” Hayley explains, adding that brand new eyes ended up being the perfect cathartic outlet for the band’s creativity and, yes, frustration. “I think making the record was part of the healing process,” Hayley elaborates. “It was good for me both as a person and as an artist.”

Considering the fact that RIOT! went gold in Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.K. and the band cracked the top five on the radio charts in the U.K. Australia, Mexico, Brazil, France, Germany and Southeast Asia, this global success story had a lot to live up to with brand new eyes. Co-produced by the band and Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), who Paramore also worked with on the track “Decode” from the double-platinum soundtrack for the movie Twilight, the album is also the first disc to officially feature new guitarist Taylor York -although York has been a writing partner and frequent touring member since the band’s inception back in 2004. “It’s really nice having Taylor there because he’s the only other guitarist that I trust with our songs,” Josh explains. “It’s so exciting to be a five-piece again,” Hayley concurs, “that’s what we were originally intended to be, so I think the writing process was a lot more rewarding having him there.” While Josh and Hayley once again made up the main songwriting team on brand new eyes, Hayley is also quick to stress that this album is the most collaborative creation of the band’s career, a fact that is evident in the disc’s sonic diversity.

In fact brand new eyes is a case study in the band’s versatility and contains as many driving, first-pumping anthems like “Ignorance” as it does upbeat pop masterpieces like “Where The Lines Overlap” and lilting, acoustic ballads such as “Misguided Ghosts.” “We really tried to venture out and experiment with our sound to see how far we could push ourselves this time around,” Josh explains. “?Misguided Ghosts’ is just finger-picking and that’s not really Paramore’s sound but for some reason it works,” he continues. “I don’t think it would have fit on RIOT! at all, but it’s definitely the perfect song for this album.” While Rob Cavallo was instrumental in helping the band fully realize their sound, the end result wouldn’t have come to fruition in the studio so quickly if the band didn’t have a clear-cut idea of what they wanted to accomplish from the onset. “I think we did a good job of guiding ourselves on this record,” Hayley explains, “but if there was ever was a time [Cavallo] had to step in he did and it was always perfect.”

The rollercoaster ride that Paramore have experienced over the past few years was also a huge influence on the lyrics for brand new eyes, however it was important for Williams not to write a cliched collection of songs about the perils of success. “I watch all these bands go from being really hungry on their first album to talking about paparazzi following them around on their next one,” Hayley explains with a laugh. “I was so afraid of sounding like that.” Instead Hayley decided to dig into her own psyche and explore some of her deepest emotions. “I would sit in my room all day and not go anywhere, because I felt like I had to keep myself secluded in order to write lyrics,” Hayley recounts. “I’m really proud because looking back on all the songs this is really exactly what I was going through?and I think a lot of people are going through this, too.”

Hayley’s honesty is evident in tracks like the acoustic ballad “The Only Exception” and album closer “All I Wanted,” both of which give an unapologetic glimpse into the inner workings of what was happening in her head over the past two years, a reality that was initially scary for the 20-year-old to advertise to the rest of the world. “Now that it’s all said and on paper I’m not as insecure about [these lyrics] because I think these songs form a full story that people are going to be able to connect with,” Hayley explains, adding that once the songs started to flow in the studio the band were instantly rejuvenated and remembered why they started Paramore in the first place. “There’s something Hayley is able to draw out of me that I can’t seem to do with anyone else,” Josh responds when asked how the band are able to craft music that defies gender and genre stereotypes. “Hayley hates the word mature,’ but I think it’s really suitable for this record because there’s much growth that’s evident on this album.”

Never content to rest on their laurels, Paramore continue to look toward the future and can’t wait to see what the next few years have in store for them. “I don’t really care how many records we sell,” Josh explains, citing that this album is a full representation of the band’s disparate influences which include Mew, Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab For Cutie. “I want to come out on the other end happier than ever just knowing that we’ve done this together and it was fun,” Hayley summarizes. “I just want to feel like this is my band, this is awesome, I’m living the dream,” she adds, her voice taking on a palpably excited tone. “If we can accomplish that together, there’s nothing more that we can ask for.”

Owl City

Official Biography

In the state of Minnesota lies a small town called Owatonna with roughly twenty-two thousand inhabitants. Within that city is a quiet road with a modest house. In that house there’s an unkempt basement with no windows. Within those confines you’ll find Adam Young of Owl City hard at work on his electronic and melodically infectious music of simple and singular beauty. Inside this “cave,” as Adam likes to describe it, he has begun to quickly win over a large audience thirsty for something genuine, something sublime. The proof is in the music as Owl City’s first official CD – Ocean Eyes – was released July 21st, 2009 and debuted at #27 on the Billboard Top 200, #2 on Billboard’s Electronic Albums chart and #3 on the Digital Albums Chart.

Being an only child in a small town, and having no musicians in his immediate family, Adam is hard pressed to say how it all started. Explaining that he always had a “push” to be creative, Adam picked up his first guitar in junior high school. Growing up in a “sheltered bubble” and being one of the more shy kids around the neighborhood, Adam seemed compelled to lend his time and creative ideas to music. “I’ve always been the shy guy, I don’t see that changing, but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable than I anticipated. I can hide behind the music.”

While his music continues to win followers all over the world, Adam does indeed hide behind his music, not going by his real name (See: Badly Drawn Boy and Dashboard Confessional); but going by the moniker Owl City. Adam was searching more for a mood when coming up with a title for his sound, rather than something easily identifiable. He goes on to explain that most of the artists that catch his eye have something unique about their name, something that lingers.

So one has to ask: how did this Owl City phenomenon begin? How does a young artist writing songs underneath his garage, acoustic foam and books everywhere, reach an audience of millions? “I’m still trying to figure it out,” Adam laughs. “Back in June of 2007 it kind of started on a whim. My parents were away for the weekend, and wanting to be loud and make some noise and whatever, I began writing versions of what became my first, self released digital EP – Of June. I put it up on MySpace the following month and didn’t tell anyone.”

Word of mouth began to spread for Adam’s music, with demands coming from various parts of the country for an album. Maybe I’m Dreaming, released digitally in March of 2008, was Owl City’s full-length debut. The album was a clear representation of Owl City’s progression as an artist. Adam became a phenomenon on MySpace and in just over a year had more than 7 million profile views and 40 million plays; outstanding for such a short span of time. It was clear that Owl City was making a colossal impact on the music scene.

What might be swirling through his head after such a quick and sudden start at stardom? “The biggest thing I was concerned-slash-worried about was the live performance – never having played a show as ‘Owl City.’ There was a lot of apprehension.” Adam’s concern, about being a one-man wizard on the keyboard, “hunched over a computer,” was put to the test at his first gig in early 2009. Most, if not all, of his fears were quickly put to rest as Adam played to a sold out show in Minneapolis. “It was surreal,” Adam says “to have people buying your t-shirts, singing the words – louder than I was; it felt so good.” And Adam will be hearing a lot more people singing his words as he tours with his full band throughout North America, China and Japan with gigs lined up through this fall and beyond.

Ocean Eyes is capturing the hearts and ears of many. Loaded with amazing loops, catchy pick-ups, and lyrics that soothe the mind and touch the heart, Adam Young has once again created a lush listening experience. Owl City’s trademark desire to escape in dreams, oceans and sky abound on this, his first official CD, in songs such as “Cave In” and “Umbrella Beach.” Adam also continues to display a terrific wit uncommon in most electronic based music in such songs as the clap infused, bouncy “Dental Care” (a humorous metaphor on smiling) and “Fireflies.” Given the official compact disc treatment, previously released fan favorite “Hello Seattle” gives the great Northwest its’ due with an ode to highlands, parking lots, Puget Sound and albatross. With glorious vocal harmonies (“The Saltwater Room”) and touching odes to love lost (“Vanilla Twilight”) Adam has dug more deeply on Ocean Eyes lyrically and musically than ever before.

Owl City’s future is as exciting, expansive and mellifluous as its music. Adam’s main focus will be to continue playing out live and satisfying a fan base that is growing and always eagerly anticipating new material. “I’ve loved every minute of it so far, and I’m looking forward to what’s going to happen next.” So are we.

Justin Bieber

Justin BieberJustin Bieber is a Canadian born singer who started out on YouTube. After posting cover versions of songs by artists such as Usher, Stevie Wonder, Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson, Justin soon began getting recognition not only from Managers and Labels but from artists themselves. After posting his rendition of Chris Brown’s “With You”, Brown personally called Bieber and congratulated him on his YouTube recognition

Justin’s record, ‘MyWorld,’ is set to release in America on November 17, 2009.

Currently released singles:

One Time

One Less Lonely Girl

Love Me

“Favorite Girl”

Full Biography

An old soul is the last thing you would expect to find inside Justin Bieber.  But all it takes is one listen to the 15 year-old soul-singing phenomenon to realize that he is light years ahead of his manufactured pop peers.

Justin BieberAfter posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007, where the multi-talented Bieber put his impeccable spin on songs from artists like Usher, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder, Justin racked up over 10,000,000 views purely from word of mouth.

“I started singing about three years ago,” says the Canadian native who grew up an only child in Stratford, Ontario. “I entered a local singing competition called Stratford Idol. The other people in the competition had been taking singing lessons and had vocal coaches. I wasn’t taking it too seriously at the time, I would just sing around the house. I was only 12 and I got second place.”

In an effort to share his victory with his loved ones, Justin began posting his performance footage online. “I put my singing videos from the competition on YouTube so that my friends and family could watch them,” he says. “But it turned out that other people liked them and they started subscribing to them. That’s how my manager found me. He saw me on YouTube and contacted my family and now I’m signed!”

Seven months after Justin started posting his videos online, former So So Def marketing executive Scooter Braun flew the then 13-year old singer to Atlanta, GA to meet with his elite colleagues. As if Justin’s natural singing talent wasn’t enough to impress Scooter’s inner circle, Braun knew Bieber was also a self-taught musician who plays the drums, guitar, piano and trumpet.

“Right when we flew into Atlanta, Scooter drove us to the studio and Usher was there in the parking lot,” remembers Bieber. “That was my first time ever being out of Canada so I went up to him and was like, ‘Hey Usher, I love your songs, do you want me to sing you one?’ He was like, ‘No little buddy, just come inside, it’s cold out.’”

All it took was a short time online for Usher to realize he was in the company of a future superstar. “A week later Usher flew me back to Atlanta,” says Bieber. “I sang for him and his people and he really wanted to sign me then and there but I still had a meeting with Justin Timberlake who also wanted to sign me.  It turned out Usher’s deal was way better. He had L.A. Reid backing him up and Scooter had a lot of really good connections in Atlanta.  I always tease Usher now and remind him he how he blew me off the first time we met.”

In October of 2008, Justin Bieber officially signed to Island Records.  His debut album, My World is an intimate look into the mind of a budding young renaissance man. With production from star hit men like The Dream and Tricky Stewart who produced “Umbrella” for Rihanna and Beyonce’s latest smash, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” Justin has everything he needs to achieve pop supremacy.

Watch Justin’s video, “One Less Lonely Girl,” below and see why I think this guy is going to be HUGE. You can follow him, here, on twitter.

His first single, “One Time” produced by Tricky, is about one of Justin’s favorite topics, puppy love.  Usher joins Justin on “First Dance” where the two share verses on a song that Bieber describes as, “A slow groovy song that people can dance to.” On the Midi-Mafia produced “Down to Earth” Justin digs deep to talk about growing up.  “Bigger” finds the teenaged singer maturing at a steady rate, while motivating his listeners to strive for their goals.

“I’m looking forward to influencing others in a positive way,” says Justin. “My message is you can do anything if you just put your mind to it. I grew up below the poverty line; I didn’t have as much as other people did.  I think it made me stronger as a person it built my character.  Now I have a 4.0 grade point average and I want to go to college and just become a better person.”

A virtually untapped well of natural artistic talent, Justin Bieber is primed to be a solid force in music for many years to come. “I think older people can appreciate my music because I really show my heart when I sing, and it’s not corny,” he says. “I think I can grow as an artist and my fans will grow with me.” And just think, he’s just getting started.

Disciple

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Disciple“Wake up friend, it’s just one life, it’s not too late, your ride is far from over!” is just one of many inspiring lines by the Christian heavy rock band, Disciple. Based in the USA, Disciple works hard to bring meaningful music to hundreds of thousands of fans across the world.

The band was founded by guitarist Brad Noah in 1992, and released their first album three years later, entitled ‘What was I Thinking’. They were then signed by Warner Resound, and released a further two albums over the next four years. In these years, they moved on to record under the label Rugged Records.

Their popularity only boomed, however, with the release of their fourth album, By God, which went on to win the Inspirational Life Award in 2001. By God earned them two Christian Rock chart toppers, and two Dove Awards nominations. After this, they established their own record label called Slain Records, and acquired a new bassist, while working on a new project entitled Back Again. Back Again was released in 2003, and sported a further two number one Christian rock hits.

After two years of recording, touring, and performing, Disciple released a new, self-titled album. The album was their most successful at the time, and was nominated for two Dove Awards, with three songs making the number one spot on the Christian rock charts. If this seemed like a hard act to follow, Disciple were up to the challenge, producing an all-new album called Scars Remain, with its best performing song being After the World, which finished as the 8th most-played Christian rock song of 2007.

Early in 2008, the band saw a makeover with two members leaving, including the founding lead guitarist, and three new members were added to the bands’ setup.
Although the vocalist remained, the change brought a new, reformed instrumental sound to the band, which, if anything, seemed to enhance their sound. This certainly shows in their latest release entitled Southern Hospitality, which is spreading into fans’ CD players and iPods like wildfire.

On the bands website, www.disciplerocks.com, the lyricist describes the bands’ lyrics as following their own circumstances and stories in life. It is most certainly for this reason that so many people relate to the songs they sing, and be as passionate as they are about Disciple’s music. And why shouldn’t they? The lyrics are musically good, biblically accurate, inspirational, and relate to the situations most people find themselves in. Their music repertoire consists of songs ranging from soft to hardcore rock, showing off their versatility as artists, and meaning that there is something in their music for everyone.

GOLDFISH

Friday, January 9th, 2009

South African music is rarely huge. We don’t pour out artists like the USA or the UK, and as customers we seem to prefer buying international artists’ music. But things are slowly beginning to turn a new corner. South African music is different; it has something that the world doesn’t. And as our artists grow with the South African music industry new talented artists are emerging that are ready to take the world stage. One of those artists is Goldfish.

GoldFish

Two Jazz musos hook up while studying music at varsity, and form a live electronic duo. They record an album themselves with little more than a double bass, a saxophone and a couple of synths. This self-released ‘underground’ album, Caught in the loop, goes on to propel them into the stratosphere, with a cult-like following and numerous #1s in their home country.

They take their incendiary multiple-instrument live act across the globe, with sold-out shows from Ibiza to Tokyo, from Dubai to Cannes. They open for giants Fatboy Slim, Mr Scruff, The Audio Bullys, Paul van Dyk, Pete Tong and Stereo MC’s. They are hailed as the Re-invention of the DJ, and voted best live act in South Africa.

GoldFish

This is Dominic Peters and David Poole, the unassuming surfer/jazz muso/electronic maniacs that are Goldfish. You couldn’t find two guys more passionate about music, and if you’ve seen their live show, you will agree that ‘Re-invention of the DJ’ is about as close as you can get to describing what they do. Combining live instruments like Double bass, Saxophones, Keyboards, Flute, and Vocals with Samplers, Effects, Synths and a healthy dollop of freeform improvisation, Goldfish have hit a nerve on dance floors across the world.

After the smash success of Caught in the loop, Goldfish return with a sophomore album that without doubt will rock the South African music scene to its foundations. This duo have spent the last couple of years pretty much coming from an underground electronica act in South Africa for people-in-the-know, to a full blown white-hot international act – right under everyone’s noses. Having been quietly chipping away, touring South Africa as well as internationally through Japan, Dubai, US, UK, Ibiza, France and Spain – building an unstoppable groundswell of fans, the duo have just signed their new album to the massive nightlife and super club brand Pacha. This alignment is set to whisk the duo beyond South Africas’ borders with tour dates already booked across America alongside Macy Gray and Fedde Le Grande, as well as a residency on Friday nights at Pacha Ibiza throughout the European summer.

Gold Fish

The new album, Perceptions of Pacha features smash-hits This is how it goes and Cruising through, already being picked up on by European Radio stations. With a gorgeous, unmistakeable sound that is so intrinsically South African but with an international appeal and polish, the duo have hit a nerve amongst music lovers across all genres. Goldfish truly have a sound that crosses over the Dance divide. Known fondly just as the ‘Fishies’ to their legions of loyal fans, it is undeniable that the incredible talent these two qualified multi-instrumentalist Jazz musicians have (both have a Masters and Bachelors in Jazz studies), has shaped their sound. Perceptions of Pacha is a masterclass in combining House, Lounge, Electro, Jazz, and African styles – using traditional live instruments like Double bass, Saxophones, Keyboards, Flute, and Vocals, into a feel-good sound you just can’t put you finger on.  Mastered in the London by Soundmasters International (Fatboy Slim, Moby, Depeche Mode) the album features 12 brand new tracks as well as a 25 minute live video enhancement featuring Goldfish burning up a live set. Now, Sony/BMG South Africa has proudly signed Goldfish for Southern Africa, and is set to take Goldfish to superstar status in their home country.

Praise for Goldfish

“One of the first acts to truly jump the great divide between dance and live excitement” – 24.com

“Make no mistake, these boys are gonna to be BIG! The two multi-instrumentalists captivate the crowd, and have the UK contingent scratching their heads and saying to each other ‘we’ve got to get these boys over to Europe…’  Essential.” – TrusttheDJ.com

“GOLDFISH … store that name in your memory for longer than 3 seconds, cause these guys are going places.” – Thunda.com

“That was fantastic!” – Pete Tong

From a technical point of view what Goldfish does is blinding…and the fact that they have combined this with catchy hooks and licks makes it doubly so. A brilliant night out! – thechiz.co.za

“The duo are the closest thing celebrity-dry South African music culture has to offer the globe in terms of recognisable, press-heavy popular icons. No. The duo are full-blown popular icons, and whether you’re a sideline fan, appreciative musician or a crazed groupie, you’ll find a way to give the Fish props.”

Overtone.co.za

“This album shows that heavy jazz cats can make music that is accessible and bursting with groove” – MIO.co.za

“Did I mention there are only two of them? Go see a live set, and then buy the disc at the show along with the bonus DVD. You will thank me.” -  Blunt magazine

“We dig these guys!” FHM

“With Goldfish, you can clearly see they are brilliant. There is nothing like playing a classic instrument to prove you’re a real artist, and people thrive off this element of their show. In fact, unless you are standing right up in the front row, you wouldn’t be able to grasp the full complexity of what they are doing…Goldfish are breaking traditional mindsets about this music genre” – Durbanscouts.co.za

‘Their musical class shines through with elements of Nu-Jazz and traditional African Jazz mixing brilliantly with bluesy Café jazz ala St Germain. But they’re no copycats. Goldfish has their own sound and it is wonderfully South African with the sophistication of Europe.” – BPM magazine

“GOLDFISH are without doubt the most exciting live band in the country at the moment. Their unique blend of deep house grooves, live instruments and hypnotic vocal samples have made them the must-see band of the year.” Anythinggoes.co.za
