Babylon’s Ark

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Whenever the general stupidity of humankind plays out there are always casualties. Whether it be other humans, the planet or the beautiful animals that inhabit this earth, the list of casualties for our greed, ignorance and arrogance is never ending. Taking the initiative and doing what he can to correct some of our idiocy is Lawrence Anthony.

My first encounter with Anthony was through his first book, ‘Elephant Whisperer.’ Despite its unimaginative name, it seems as though there are whisperers for every animal these days, the book was a fascinating look into one of my favourite animals. This time Anthony, again with the help of Graham Spence, tells his story of reaching out to help the Baghdad zoo as America continues its attempt to get rid of every terrorist in the world.

Spence and Anthony brilliantly portray what it’s like to be in a war zone attempting the seemingly impossible. Mixed with a few humorous moments and interesting characters, you’ll quickly be transported to the battle ground. Anthony’s interesting perspective on handling situations is most admirable, although he continually points to others as the heroes of his story.

Your heart will break for the animals as you root for the zoo staff and their mountainous challenge. A must read.

Wave House

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

The Wave House has been around for many years in good old Durban. A massive man made machine that produces solid waves to ride. Despite its age I had never ridden the beast and decided that this week it was time. My friends Mandy and Jin joined me, although they refused to ride with all sorts of rather lame excuses. Thankfully that meant they could man the camera and catch these awesome shots of my epic failures and mild successes riding the D-Rex. Enjoy.

Stalker

Friday, April 1st, 2011

It all started in 2009, on a small youth camp in the middle of the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. As usual, I was keeping myself entertained with friends when I came up with a random song about stalkers. We thought it was hilarious and joked about starting a band with Stalker as our first hit. The song was stuck in my head, and eventually I recorded a chipmunk version of it which was released on Srizzil and later removed.

The song was destined for greater, and in February 2011 I decided to bring it to life in a comedic music video. I found a funny recording where my voice hadn’t been chipmunkified and beefed up the song a little. Then it was lights, camera, action. I filmed the black screen shots, and then went about creating arbitrary moments where the stalker would freak me out.

Something was missing though. I needed a stalker, a real face to put to the song. I found that in my brave friend Ryleigh. In spite of the song’s harsh words, she put on a crazy face and stalked me for the camera. Although far from creepy, scary or ugly, Ryleigh created a brilliant portrayal of a crazed fan. Huge props to her.

Have you ever had a real stalker experience?

CityHill Church Launch

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

It finally arrived. HCF is now CityHill church. The 6th of March was an amazing day, thousands gathered from all the church’s sites in one venue. There was excitement in the air as the church began to worship God together and celebrate his amazing love.

I was involved in the Promise Land, our children’s church’s, rap. The most daunting part was trying to remember all those words. It’s amazing how, even though you know the words, when you stand on a stage the words can disappear. In the end I remembered most of them, and improvised for some. It was an awesome privilege to be a part of such an iconic moment in the church’s history.

Visit CityHill’s website here to find out more.

Special thanks to Mandy Rothquel, Msizi Hadebe, Cole Marshall and Ayanda for filming different bits for me.

Study Postponing Skills

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

That’s right, you’re not alone. I too am an expert procrastinator when it comes to studying those boring subjects. The cool subjects are always easy. You already know most of the stuff because it was interesting enough to keep your attention in class. The boring ones aren’t so easy, and when you’re doing your honours in accounting it’s verging impossible.

However, every so often, I break the bounds and perform that verging impossible task of studying. Unfortunately it never adds up to enough, but it’s the thought that counts right? Nope, nobody cares about what you thought. They just want results. Lame.

Thankfully we have other things to do in life that make it more interesting than sleep, eat, study and exercise. OK, if you’re fat you can probably take off the last bit, although perhaps you should seriously consider adding it, your call.

This week included an excursion to the beach to test out a different studying environment. Although it was surprisingly successful, it still couldn’t subtract from the horror of death taxes. To celebrate my parents 23rd anniversary we went to watch a very good comedian at a nearby theater. It was good to laugh so much. A simple person tried to get onto the stage at one point. Sad, but completely hysterical to watch.

Also on the agenda is a name change for my church. It’s a pretty big deal. All five sites are joining for a celebratory service and I got roped into rapping a verse in the kid’s song. It’s actually lots of fun, although watching back the vlog footage I have many awkward moments on stage when I get bored and start looking around like an A.D.D kid. You can hopefully look forward to the vlog on the Srizzil Extra channel soon. UPDATE: Watch the vlog here.

This week, as with every other, I plan to achieve the miraculous and get all my studying done on schedule. Wish me luck.
