SBS: When the saints

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

I’ll be the first to admit that my singing videos on YouTube leave much to be desired. I still seem to get nervous singing in front of the camera. I think I’ve finally grown enough confidence to believe I can in fact sing, but the nerves are still a big issue. Let’s not even discuss in front of people by myself.

So I’ve decided to do something a bit more fun to help me grow more. Today I’m launching the Singing in the Bathroom Series or SBS for short. It’s where, you guessed it, I take my camera into the bathroom and sing some fun songs and act crazy. As lyrics that aren’t mine tend to linger in some difficult to reach place in my brain I’ve started with something I couldn’t mess up. When the saints. Let me know what you think.

Triple Bieber Cover

Friday, February 25th, 2011

I’ve wanted to cover some of Justin Bieber’s songs since he came out with his first album and then again with his second. Unfortunately it just never happened. The few times I did attempt to do anything it was horrible. Then, one night I was messing around with a guitar and singing some songs and decided to let the camera roll. This is the result. The Justin Bieber songs have been spliced together.

If you noticed, I did mix up some words in there, but hey at least it’s not the national anthem. :P

SingStar Queen Review

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

SingStar QueenAs the SingStar week has continued I’ve battled to find large differences in the SingStar games themselves. After all, the games are essentially the same except for the songs. When an addition is added to the PS3 version of the game all the other games get the update too, making the game a large package that you buy expansions for. Come to think of it, it’s like a karaoke version of the Sims.

With all that said the songs are what make the game. You may have an amazing framework but with no music, you have no game. Queen, the group of Legends now has twenty-five of their greatest hits on SingStar for you to Dance, Sing and stomp your feet to. It should be noted that they have been given an extremely rare accolade, after Abba, of having a Solo SingStar game. Although some of the songs have been on previous SingStar games, it’s an absolute pleasure to have all of their great hits together.

Let’s look at this from a youth perspective though. If you’re under twenty you haven’t really had much of a Queen influence in your life have you? After all, they’re so old! You’d be extremely wrong. As you browse through Queen’s impressive titles, songs will come up that you only recognise when listening to. After running through the play list you’ll have said, at least ten times, ‘I didn’t know that was a Queen song.’

SingStar QueenBesides the pleasant surprises you’ll be hit with the amazing anthem songs of Queen that we all know and love. Songs like, ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘We are the Champions,’ and ‘Another One Bites the Dust.’

This ‘expansion’ to the SingStar series will help boost its number of tracks but it’s still lacking in comparison with Rock Band and Guitar Hero’s library. Sony needs to begin releasing more songs both online and on disk to attract a more diverse range of gamers. SingStar Queen is a step in the right direction, and I’m happy to pronounce it fun for young people, not just those of the Queen generation.

Included in both the PS3 and PS2 versions of Singstar Queen:

  • Another One Bites the Dust
  • Bicycle Race
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Breakthru

SingStar PS3 Review

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Sing Star PS3With the solid foundation of PS2 titles under the SingStar belt, it was only a matter of time before the next generation of SingStar graced our gaming screens. As our SingStar week continues I thought we should start with the first PS3 title before launching into the exciting new ones.

I think it’s fair to say that by now most people know what SingStar is, or they can gather it’s a singing game for your PlayStation. It’s simple, plug in your mics, pop in your SingStar Disk and sing along to your favourite songs. As the music video plays in the background, and the words are highlighted at the bottom of your screen, your singing is scored in real time.

What the PS2 version of SingStar started, the PS3 has almost perfected. The user experience is seamless, and unmatched by upcoming imitations by Microsoft and Nintendo. The PS3’s SingStar takes singing to a stylish new HD level with stunning menus and the biggest addition, the SingStore. The SingStore allows you to expand your music library with individual songs or packs that you want. No more buying disks with songs you don’t like.

Don’t worry, for those of you stuck in the stone ages Sony will continue releasing new versions on disks with more tracks and more features. What I really love about the PS3 version is that as new disks are released with new features, you’ll be able to download an update so that the features are available for all your songs, not just the new disk.

Sing Star PS3The only downside to this game is arguably not really that important. Playing by yourself doesn’t have that much appeal. This is a social game, as it always has been, and without friends it can just become plain boring. However if you’re the perfectionist bettering your score could keep you going or even the constant search for PS3 trophies could supply you with hours of individual SingStar fun.

As usual your EyeToy works with SingStar to add an additional level of fun and mockery as you watch back the hysterical performances put on by friends and see them squirm as they hear and see themselves sing.

This is a hard game to fault because of its pure entertainment value. After all, isn’t that what we buy games for?
