Moving to the home site

standouttWelcome to the first instalment of the Life and times of Marc Williams. These blog posts will be more personal and not the usual jokes, reviews and entertainment news that will continue to flow through the new standoutt. I’ll use this space to air some views and whatever little thoughts pop into my head. For now though I wanted to give everyone an update on the beta version of standoutt.

The last few weeks in the standoutt universe have been very busy. Once I get into a project I tend to go all out and things have progressed a lot faster than I had originally thought. In my excitement I have managed to get the blog up and running nicely and a preliminary version of the Srizzil page too. I have also moved the beta onto the main site now, rather than later, to make Google happy. They don’t treat your site too well if you keep moving your content around.

Unfortunately the move didn’t go very well. I backed up the wrong files and after upgrading a few things the site broke. It took me forever to fix the problem but praise God we are back up and running. This is the reason I hate computers – they aren’t people proof. If I make a mistake the computer should help me fix it, not make it harder to fix. What took five seconds to break turned into hours of fixing. These things only make a person more paranoid.

Looking to the future, the next few weeks will have a focus on content and bug fixing. Once I’m satisfied that everything is 100% with the blog, home page, and Srizzil page, I can start working on the movies page.

Stay tuned and enjoy. If you have any thoughts, ideas or complaints, feel free to contact us at www.standoutt.com/contact

Welcome to standoutt’s 2009 beta

standoutt betaThis is it, the big show, the main event, the party to end all parties, our beta phase. This is going to be one of the largest upgrades I’ve ever made to any of my sites. For the first time ever, the design is 100% original, and I’ll be coding it all. *Ahhhh* As much as a hate working with this strange language, seeing your design come to life is one of the most rewarding things in the world. Unfortunately professional designers are way too expensive, and the chances of them doing exactly what I want are slim. So here we go. (more…)

Wake up media

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Media MonkeysIs it just me or is the news getting boring. Because of the articles we create on Srizzil I try to keep up to date with what is going on around the world and in our home country, South Africa. But with all the amazing technology and millions of sites updated every couple of seconds the news seems to be getting really stale.

There is always someone famous going rouge, adopting orphans, or splurging their millions on something completely ridiculous. There are always corrupt and lying politicians, weird people having too many babies or strange weather patterns accruing all over the world. There’s always a war to be stopped and one getting started, another big company picking on the little guy and some new gadget that nobody needs but everybody wants. It’s old, it’s boring and it’s sad.

I don’t know about you but I’m tired of hearing about these things. They aren’t interesting anymore, they aren’t innovative or award worthy. Today news outlets make up stories to sell papers to the extent of ruining people’s lives for something they never did. It’s about hype and telling everyone that the guy they thought was great isn’t actually great at all. It’s about trying to prove genuine people have something to hide at all costs, driving the person to the point of insanity. Why? For money, fame or do these people get a kick out of seeing other people down?

It’s time the media started reporting on things that are newsworthy, things that are different. How about telling us what’s happening with cancer research. Not just that they may be one step closer to a cure but what do we know and what don’t we know. What can we as citizens do to help? What about discussing the real issue behind gay rights? It’s not whether or not they deserve rights as gays, it’s about weather society actually agrees that being gay is as normal as the media makes out. We won’t get into it all here but the fact is society is not ready to accept gay behaviour because they haven’t lost their sense of right and wrong completely yet.

Let’s be controversial but for the right reasons. Let’s do it to stir up discussion, to make change, to be a positive influence on other people and not be a group of whiners. Let’s get over the fact that people are racist and look at why they are racist. How do we change people’s perceptions of each other to the extent that colour is no longer an issue? Fighting over who is racist and who isn’t or who’s better off than who won’t solve a thing.

Wake up media. It’s time for a refresh.
